Why books? A book can be made of almost anything, and I can stretch its definition. Some will be fancy, skilled and take time. Others will be quick-&-dirty, maybe just images, or ephemeral, disappearing books. Follow along. We'll discover together how to create a book a day for 365 days.Donnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09409270814501963624noreply@blogger.comBlogger340125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-461322650172599507.post-66335612256858053562012-01-31T02:21:00.000-08:002012-01-31T02:21:03.296-08:00BOOK 365!!!! A FULL YEAR OF BOOKS!

I did it! This is book 365 in my year-long book-a-day challenge.

OK, I will admit right here that it took me just slightly longer than 365 days. I am 6 days over my exact year. But I am trying to be easy on myself here. I am celebrating anyway. I hope you will celebrate with me.

This final book is a leather journal for my friend Michael (because he called dibs), who I've known for over 40 years. The base leather for the book is a putty-colored cowhide. Around that, I have wrapped another piece of leather that I think is ostrich. I can't be sure because I pulled it unmarked from the scrap bin at the leather store. I saw it an pounced. It's a rich deep purple.

The pages are Neenah Sundance 70 lb paper in crushed cream, a lovely paper for writing or sketching with pencil, pen, ink, markers.

The journal is bound with a long stitch binding (also called a Medieval limp binding) with medium brown waxed cotton thread. It makes an interesting stitch pattern on the spine. The unusual closure is made from a found object I picked up at a flea market. I think it might be some type of faucet handle. A thong of the purple leather ties through it and around the journal to keep it closed.

This is a rich, elegant journal and I hope Michael lives it.

I've had these work gloves sitting on my bench for a couple months now, waiting for me to make magic with them. Finally, I realized I wanted to use them to point out how much work in this world is done by women. According to a Report by Richard H. Robbins, called "Global Problems and the Culture of Capitalism," women do two-thirds of the world's work, receive 10 percent of the world's income and own one percent of the means of production. I had a theme.

The book is an accordion fold/concertina fold book with 16 images of women working. From Rosie the Riveter, to seamtresses in a 19th-century sweat shop, from African women carrying baskets to soldiers, cops and crossing guards, Oprah Winfrey to Judy Garland, a Muslim Wal-Mart clerk to a doctor, PBX operators to Hilary Clinton, these women are the workers of the world.

To make the structure, I painted the insides of the gloves with several coats of acrylic medium to stiffen them and keep the fingers together. I left the thumbs unpainted for flexibility. I folded a long strip of Arches Text Wove paper into accordion sections and glued the printed photos to the pages. Then I glued the first and last pages to the palms of the gloves, under the thumbs.

I stitched the gloves together at two points with a chain stitch cord in two colors of cotton thread to match the color of the gloves.

OK, so I think this book is pretty damn cool.

What's with that? Well, in the wind-up to posting the final couple of books in the year-long challenge, I thought I'd better look back over the whole past year and make sure I hadn't inadvertently skipped any days. And sure enough, way back in February, I just skipped right over a day. So, to be honest with you and myself, I needed to fill in that day.

So, Book 34. Here's another recycled vintage book made into a blank book/journal. I'm not sure of the exact date of this book since there was no copyright or publication date anywhere in the book. But from the cover illustration, I'd put it at about 1900-1910. The strange thing is that the illustration--two boys in sports outfits and gear--has nothing whatever to do with the content of the book, which is a history of Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys of Vermont in the 18th century. Go figure. Maybe it was part of a series for boys and they all had that cover. The condition is pretty good, but there is one spot on the cover that is slightly blistered (where the book cloth has come loose from the board beneath. If I had a fine needle syringe, I could probably shoot a bit of glue underneath and glue it down again.

Since the bright red accents on the cover design stand out so much, I decided to play off that and use red thread for the binding. I also alternated green and red paper tape on the spine folds of the signatures for an attractive pattern on the exposed spine.

It came out looking pretty good.
Not. Want. To. Mess. With. You're not going to win. That's what I love about them.

After choosing the dangerous women images from my collection, I sized them to fit on 1/4 of a normal sized page. I printed the covers out two to a page, let them sit a few minutes to dry, then sprayed them with a light coat of acrylic sealer to protect the image from scratching. The matte finish photo paper I used is heavy weight and didn't really need a backing to work for the covers.

I scored the spine fold, using three score lines with very small spaces between so I would get a slightly rounded spine to accommodate the thickness of the single signature. I folded the pages and trimmed the single signature to fit then rounded the corners at the fore edge. After nesting the pages inside the folded cover, I poked holes 1/2" apart the whole length of the notebook and sewed it in a running stitch, down the spine then back up again, with white waxed linen thread.

After boning the fold a bit more, I put the little notebook under weight so it would lay more or less flat and closed.

Done. I like these. I'm going to make more. They look good, they are fairly fast to make, the materials cost is low, and I'm certain they will sell.
They are a bit bizarre but really fun. And the covers are neat! So, of course, I had to recycled one into a journal/blank book.

This is Book the Second, The Reptile Room. This follows my usual construction procedure with these upcycled hard cover books. The covers were slit and bound, the pages folded and punched, some of the signature fold edges bound with colorful paper tape. This was bound with a single-needle coptic binding using maroon waxed cotton thread.

I included a couple of the original illustrations form the book into the pages. The book's spine became a bookmark.

I'll always be on the lookout for more Lemony Snicket books in good enough condition to recycle/upcycle into fun journals.
I love the music, too. So I was delighted to find a vinyl album of the show in a thrift shop. It was perfect for one of my vinyl record journals.

I cut the record to size with a band saw and smoothed the edges on a belt sander. I also sanded the fore edge corners of the covers into curves. Then I cut two pieces of the cardboard record jacket for the back cover. On the back is a picture of Liza on top of the word "Cabaret" in red lights. The inside back lining is a black and white picture of her.

For the pages, I used a cream-colored paper with lint flecks, folded into eight signatures. I tipped in bright orange end papers to repeat the orange color from the record label. I also rounded the fore edge corners of the pages to mirror the corves of the covers.

I drilled the stitching holes in the covers and poked holes in the sigs with an awl. The book is bound with a single-needle coptic stitch, also called a chain stitch binding.

This is a great journal, clever and very well made, if I say it who shouldn't.

I have long loved pulp fiction imagery. It's just so immediate. It pulls you right into the moment of action, like good writing should. So I love using this imagery in my books.

For this 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" notebook/journal, I used two images and I reversed the one on the "back" so that the journal essentially has two fronts. You can use it either way. After printing the double image on heavyweight matte photo paper, I sprayed it with an acrylic surface spray to protect the finish. I needed a slightly rounded spine fold to accommodate the thickness of the two signatures, so I scored the inside center of the cover three times, about 3/16th of an inch apart on each score. Then when I folded it without boning it down hard on the creases, it was a bit rounded

I folded two signatures of 70 lb cream paper and stitched them both through a single set of sewing stations in the spine with a five-hole pamphlet stitch using a heavy waxed linen cord that feels almost like leather. I left the ends of the cord long enough at the center hole that I could wrap it around the book and tie it shut.

Nice notebook for a man, I think.
It was part of a whole series of books about the Motor Boys, apparently playing off the idea of the then relatively new motor car as a source of adventure. Apparently there were a whole bunch of these series of boys' books--the back pages of this book had ads for many of them. In fact, I liked those pages so much, I incorporated several of the ad pages inside this journal.

As usual, the covers were sliced off the book, the spine carefully removed and the raw edges tape bound. I lightly waxed the cover to preserve and improve its finish--although it is in wonderful condition for being more than a century old. I punched holes for sewing stations, folded sigs and punched holes in those too and covered the spine fold with the same green tape as the spine edge, incorporating a few illustrations and other pages from the original book. The book was bound with a chain stitch binding--a single-needle coptic stitch--with white waxed linen thread.

I made a bookmark from the book's spine by folding back the cut edges and covering the entire backside with green paper tape.

This is really a lovely journal.
It's what she calls an "X-book," because of the shape of the thing while you're folding it over. It is exactly the same structure as the Indian Wedding Prayer book I posted a few days ago except that there are pockets at the bottoms of the pages for stashing things in.

The book measures 2 3/4" square and is folded from a single sheet of paper. The folded up pockets hold small images of women in hats--with all their charm and silliness. The photos can be taken out of the pockets and moved around at will.

Unlike the Indian wedding prayer book, I made a separate cover for this one from a piece of decorative paper. Then I folded flaps from the cover over the first page and glued them down.

Kind of a silly thing, but I'd like to explore the idea of the hats a bit more.
I thought I was done with these until the delivery man came this week with another new brand--and I fell in love with the Pyramid Hefeweizen package.

This is a simple Japanese stab bound book. They're easy to make, fairly quick, not materials intensive. This one could be the guest book at a beer tasting party.

The front and back covers are lined with silver metallic card stock--nice and heavy--and the pages are peach-colored text-weight paper. For the side binding, I used narrow navy blue ribbon and sewed it with a criss-cross pattern.

OK, no more beer books for yet awhile.

Looking through the racks of vintage books, I struck some gold.

I came home with several treasures to make into recycled book journals. And one of the best was this old Dick Tracy book. Printed in 1943, the novel was based on the square-jawed detective's exploits people already knew from the cartoon strip.

This was a cheap novel in its time and the paper shows it. It was badly discolored and quite brittle. In face, I debated whether or not to include any of the pages from the original book, because of the brittleness of the paper. But the illustrations were just too cool to leave out. I had some text paper almost the same yellow as the unintentionally yellowed original pages, so that became the text block.

The covers were pretty dried out but not badly cracked or scratched, so I went over them with a light rubbing of beeswax to lubricate and seal them then buffed them with a soft cloth till they actually looked not bad at all.

I cut the illustrations from the book as carefully as I could. After cutting off the cover boards, I bound the cut edge with washi tape well boned down. Just for fun and to brighten it up, I used a green and gold diamond pattern tape on the edges and the folds of all the signatures, to be seen at the exposed spine.

The single-needle coptic binding was stitched with black waxed linen thread. The spine of the book became a book mark.

I've been making a lot of these recycled books because I plan to sell them, online and off, after the challenge, and I need to build up some stock, as well as perfecting my technique.

I do think Dick Tracy will sell.
Even though it's not really old (as witness the scholastic website printed on the back cover) it looks old. It's a book that is supposed to show boys how to be the best at everything that boys like to do. I think it makes a great journal. The intense cobalt blue with silver printing on the cover is really eye-catching.

As per my usual style, I slit off the spine and made a bookmark from that part. I taped over the cut ends of the front and back covers, poked holes, folded up a bunch of signatures--these are a really neat astro-bright white paper with tiny confetti-colored flecks in it--and poked holes in those too. I also added blue washi tape to the spine fold of some of the signatures to create a colorful pattern on the exposed spine binding.

The single-needle coptic binding is done with white waxed linen thread.

Cool little journal!
More beer! More... oops, sorry, I got carried away for a minute.

But yeah, here are a couple more six-pack beauties. The Corona 6-pack is a little ordinary because the graphics aren't that great. But I really like the Fat Tire book.

In both of these blank books, I simply cut off the two large sides of the carton, and lined them with a very strong card stock. I creased the fold line for the front cover. I cut text paper pages to size and stacked the up. Clamped them between the front and back covers, poked holes through the whole sandwich.

I can make these Japanese Stab Bindings all day long and twice on Sunday. It's about the easiest sewn binding there is. And it always makes a nice book.
So I chose these AARP membership solicitation cards instead.

I remember clearly the day I got my first piece of junk mail from AARP. I'd just turned 50 and the mail was an invitation to join the organization. I remember my then-husband saying it was a "Rite of Passage," right up there with a young man getting that "Greetings" letter from Selective Service on turning 18.

This little notebook is pretty straightforward. I just poked two holes along one edge of two cards, folded up some signatures and trimmed them to size, and bound the whole thing with a double-needle coptic stitch binding. The hardest part was remembering how to do the binding. Mostly, I do single-needle coptic and I think I made a mistake or two on this. I should have looked it up.

Oh well, I'll never sell this one so it will just end up in some personal "archives" somewhere.
I just grabbed them because I liked the graphics, but I had no idea what I would do with them.

So, what I did with them... I glued the postcards together, back to back, to make two double-sided covers. And I did it so that when the front cover is flipped UP, the postcard on the other side will be facing UP too. I cut a pile of text pages to size. I punched holes in the covers and the text pages with a round hole punch. I stacked the whole thing up and clamped it with binder' clips.

For the ledger binding, I cut two lengths of ribbon and threaded one length through the first hole, around the top and edge and tied it in a square knot. Then I did the same thing with the second piece of ribbon in the second hole.

On each ribbon, I slid a fat big-hole glass bead down over the ribbon. Then I tied the loose ends of the ribbons into a knot at the top of the book. You can use this knot to hang the book if you want to. That's what the ancient Japanese did with these "ledger" books--kept them hanging and handy for a quick consultation and a "How 'm I doin'"?

The postcard images make this book.
I found this red and black "Mickey" paper in the scrapbooking papers at JoAnns and grabbed it.

The two-sewn-as-one binding is really simple. I got it from Alisa Golden's book (you can see the book by clicking on the link in the right column). Basically, you fold up two signatures of text pages. You fold a cover with an extra "tab" folded inside the spine. Then you lay out both signatures, one with the valley fold on top of that little tab/flap, and the other with a mountain fold under the tab. Then you poke holes and stitch once through the whole sandwich. I used a simple 5-station pamphlet stitch.

Once you fold everything back into shape, you have a nice little book with two signatures. The hardest part is getting the spine fold to lie flat. I had to bone this down a lot then put it under some pretty heavy weights for awhile. I added a length of waxed linen thread stitched to the spine center to tie the book closed.

Handy little thing. Think I'll make one to carry around in my purse.

The graphics on the Great White beer is so cool it really had to be included, snapping jaws and all. And the Mike's hard cranberry lemonade is a nice color. The Bud is just Bud (sort of like the beer itself). But that 12-pack gave me a couple of pieces large enough to make a notebook with a ribbon double spiral binding, so I went for it.

For the other two six-pack beer journals, I cut the sides from the six-packs and included part of the bottom of the box for the spine. That way, I could incorporate the fold line into the design of the book.

These are cross structure binding. I got the directions for this binding from Alisa Golden's book "Making Handmade Books." I've made a few of these now, and I still don't feel like I know how to do it RIGHT. They are just never as neat as I want. But these two are usable.

With a cross structure binding, you basically have two sets of interlocking "straps" coming from the two covers at the spine. You stitch the signatures over the straps of one side, then slide the straps of the other side into place. Then you fold them over and glue the straps to the insides of the covers. That's where I tend to fall down. I find it really hard to get everything perfectly aligned for gluing and then the final book is off. You can just see the straps glued into place in the last photo.

Anyway, here they are, three more books done.
The actual book is so simple you could make it in a class with young children. But it can made quite sophisticated too.

I've had this "Indian Wedding Prayer" rattling around in a saved file on my computer for awhile. I wanted to use it in something because it is so lovely, but it wasn't until this book that the proper use hit me.

The book is made from a single 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of heavy paper. I laid the text and image out in a desktop publishing program and printed it. Then it's just a matter of folding it very carefully so all the folds line up properly when the booklet is closed. These folded books frequently tend not to stay closed, so I incorporated the ribbon through the last page and wrapped it around to the front to tie in a bow.

A sweet little thing.
Today's inning features two blank journals bound with the single-needle coptic stitch binding.

The Alaskan Amber journal was actually the first beer six-pack book I made. I loved the ship graphic (an ice cutter, I assume) and the bright red background. I cut the largest part of the six-pack, the front and back panels, trimmed them and then backed them with some gold metallic textured cardstock with a nice weight. That makes the cardboard stiff enough to bind well.

The Budweisser six-pack is a lot more familiar to most people. Bud is one of our best sellers (and this one is a slight cheat since it's from a 12-pack, not a six). I lined the trimmed cardboard with more of the heavy metallic-finish card stock, in silver.

The pages for both books are a camel-colored text weight paper folded into signatures. I bound the Alaskan Amber book with red waxed cotton thread. For the Bud journal, I used doubled thread, one strand of red and one of black.

Nifty little journals. And two more down.
It can be picky, because it often cracks if you crease it, but I love the look and feel of it.

The piece I used for the cover of this guest book-journal was textured/sculpted into a design while the bark was still wet. Then, when it dried to form, it was painted with natural pigments. I bought this paper in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico last year.

For the back of the book, I used another piece of amate paper in a light color.

The guest book's pages are 80 lb cream-colored paper with a slight fleck. The top and bottom edges of the pages are hand torn for a more natural look.

The binding is a Japanese stab binding done with two colors of waxed cotton thread. At the top, I left the threads hanging and tied on two cylindrical carved bone buttons. I think they are the perfect complement to the paper.

I will always be looking for ways to use this luscious bark paper. It takes me back to Mexico and gives anything I make with it a rich, rustic, earthy feel.
Or at least, beer (and other) six-pack books. More of my infamous recycled packaging.

We recently started selling beer in our store. One day, while taking bottles out of six packs to put in the color for individual sale, I noticed how many of the six pack holders had really cool graphics. And in the final sprint to get the last of my 365 books finished and posted, I needed ideas quick. So I started cutting.

This is the first posting in a series of books with various types of bindings I've been making the last couple of weeks--all from six pack containers (well, one is from a 12-pack, but who's quibbling?).

Today's entries are all from a single six-pack of Blue Moon beer, a Belgian White Wheat Ale.

The first book used the large flat front and back of the six-pack. It's a blank journal bound with a single needle coptic stitch. I backed the covers with blue metallic-finish textured card stock. For the stitching, I used a double strand of waxed cotton threads in two shades of blue for extra interest at the spine.

The second book, a mini-jotter notebook, is the same structure as the first but much smaller. It's made from the two small panels that come together at the side of the six pack. It is stitched with dark blue waxed cotton thread in a single-needle coptic binding.

Finally, I used the two small panels from the other side of the six pack to make a French door book. It's actually two small coptic-bound books stitch to a single back made of chip board and lined with metallic card stock. The "French door" opens to reveal two little notebooks side by side, opening in opposite directions, one stitched on the left, the other on the right. Hard to explain, easy to see in the photos. The book closes at the front with a chain-stitch cord that wraps around a square opalescent bead.

This series makes me think of Victor Hugo. Whenever he started writing a new book, he always bought a new bottle of ink. When he finished writing "Les Miserables," the bottle of ink he'd bought at the beginning was empty. He told his wife he should name the book, "What There is in a Bottle of Ink."

So I guess today's post is "What There is in a Six-Pack of Beer."
This is a really nice piece of leather, like a good quality purse would be made out of. It's a pale beige with a smooth finish, enhanced, I think, by a couple of natural markings in the leather.

For the pages, I used a rich, heavy cream-colored paper with a very subtle multi-colored fleck in it. The paper has just a slight tooth that makes it nice both for writing and drawing. A leaf-print paper in tones of green and gray makes the end papers.

The eight signatures are bound to the cover with light green waxed thread in a long stitch binding. I staggered the holes to give the binding an attractive pattern, and added beads. The top and bottom rows of stitches have small turquoise glass beads. In the center of the spine is a large turquoise nugget. It makes for a fairly dramatic spine.

This is really a luscious journal I'd be pleased to write in myself.
The stories were illustrated with pen and ink illustrations I wanted to save.

After cutting the spine off the book and removing the book block, I bound the raw cut edges of the covers with brown patterned tape. I carefully trimmed several of the illustrations from the book and used two of them--both showing river boats--as end papers inside the front and back covers. Then I trimmed more illustrations and taped one to the front of each of the eight signatures I'd folded up. The brown patterned tape folded over the spine edge of the signature makes for a nice pattern on the exposed spine of the book.

After punching holes for the sewing stations in the covers and sigs, I bound the journal with a single-needle coptic stitch binding with brown waxed cotton thread.

I also used the original spine of the book to make a bookmark. It's not in the photos below because it's buried somewhere on my desk and I couldn't find it to photograph. But It IS here and as soon as I clean off this mess, it will show up!

Really!
This little tile cover miniature accordion book is similar to the book I did a couple weeks ago about San Miguel de Allende, the home of my heart. Puttering about in the store today, I noticed that some tile magnets we had were about the same size as the ones I used on that book.

I knew I had some nice photos I've taken here in Chloride, Arizona in the last couple years. So I thought why not do another tile cover accordion book.

First I had to pry the magnets off the back of the tiles, but that was not hard. I covered the back and edges of the tiles with brown lokta paper and painted over it with PVA glue to make it stronger. I sized and printed out all the tiny photos. Then I tore strips of Arches Text Wove paper 1 3/4" wide and accordion folded it. I needed one join in a valley fold of the accordion to make it long enough for all the photos.

After folding it up, I glued the photos to the pages. I designed and printed a first page plus a last page colophon. Once I had glued the tile covers to the accordion, this little jewel was done. I do think it needs to go under some weights. It tends to want to lay just slightly open.

Some of you have probably picked up on the fact that I'm not all that fond of Chloride. But this little book (about 2" square) makes it look not so bad. So I guess that's a good thing.
Today, we got a DVD in the mail, a promotional film for a tourist attraction here in Arizona. Tonight, while setting the table, I noticed the bubble mailer it came in was sitting there. Hmmm, nice size. Already folded over. Padded. BOOK!

I cut the envelope open and started taping the cut edges with leopard print duct tape. I was going to leave part of the white envelope showing but changed my mind because that leopard print was just too cool. So I covered the whole thing inside and out. It did add a nice rigidity to the book while still keeping the nice cushiony feel to it form the bubble wrap inside. I cut a pile of light beige paper to fit and clamped the block inside the book cover. Punched holes through the whole thing and bound it with black waxed linen thread in a typical Japanese stab binding stitch.

I knew I had a sort of African-y looking bone bead somewhere, so I left longish threads at the top edge. It took a while to find the bead, but finally I tied it on and called this one done.
