A Book a Day? What's Up With That?

Hi, and welcome to this year-long project. So what's this all about and how did it happen, you might ask. In mid 2007, artist Noah Scalin decided to make a skull out of anything he could find, every day for a year. It stretched him in ways he never imagined, as an artist, a writer and a person. His experience turned into a blog that went viral, and then a book.

Others have picked up on the idea: 365 Hearts, 365 Masks, 365 Bears drawn on a cellphone, 365 paper napkin mustaches.
I wanted to play, too, and I chose books. I love books, I know a bit about making books (thanks to my talented book-maker sister, Marilyn Worrix), and they're broad enough in definition to give me a lot of creative leeway.

The whole point is not really the books. The idea is to stretch myself in many ways as an artist and a person, to set up a discipline, stick with it and see what that teaches me.

I hope you'll join with me and follow along on the journey chronicled here, and let me know what you think.

Day 72 - The "What Have I Got?" Book

Well! I apologize to everyone for not posting a book yesterday. I did make one, but by the time I got home from the craft show I was doing, I was so exhausted I literally couldn't keep my eyes open. No way was I going to be able to photograph, edit and post pix of the book. So I'm posting it now and in a bit I'll post today's book. Sorry if anyone checked the blog today and was disappointed.

During the show yesterday, which was dreadfully slow because it was snowing off and on all day, I knew I'd  be tired when I got home. So I decided to make the book at the show. (It wasn't like I was being bombarded by customers.) But I hadn't really come prepared. I'd thrown a few basic tools into a bag in case I needed to repair something. But no paper.

Here's a brief view of my thought processes: I could steal some paper towels from the ladies' room for pages (save that idea in case nothing else comes up). *Rummaging in boxes* Hmmm, there's some white tissue paper for wrapping; flimsy but could work for pages. Or here's a lapidary tools catalog. Ugly. I  brought a book, but I haven't finished reading it yet so don't want to cut it up. Hmmm, a stack of white plastic "thank you" bags. Could cut 'em up. Plastic pages? Oh wait! I've got one whole uncut page of printed-out earring cards for my jewelry. They're printed on photo stock. And look, here's a small stack of 3x5 cards. Hah!  Got it!

So I cut a block of the earring cards, used the index cards for the pages, and stitched with a Japanese stab binding. I added 4 cherry quartz beads at one edge because I had them.

See, you really can make a book out of anything you have on hand. And you ALWAYS  have SOMETHING.

  1. Very clever! And I'm sure it helped to pass the time. Sorry the show was a disappointment.
