A Book a Day? What's Up With That?

Hi, and welcome to this year-long project. So what's this all about and how did it happen, you might ask. In mid 2007, artist Noah Scalin decided to make a skull out of anything he could find, every day for a year. It stretched him in ways he never imagined, as an artist, a writer and a person. His experience turned into a blog that went viral, and then a book.

Others have picked up on the idea: 365 Hearts, 365 Masks, 365 Bears drawn on a cellphone, 365 paper napkin mustaches.
I wanted to play, too, and I chose books. I love books, I know a bit about making books (thanks to my talented book-maker sister, Marilyn Worrix), and they're broad enough in definition to give me a lot of creative leeway.

The whole point is not really the books. The idea is to stretch myself in many ways as an artist and a person, to set up a discipline, stick with it and see what that teaches me.

I hope you'll join with me and follow along on the journey chronicled here, and let me know what you think.

Book 96 - My Adventure Book

This version of "My Adventure Book" is actually a custom order. I arranged a trade with my friend Laura, who does great lapidary. (You can see her work in her etsy shop, CabbingRough. I got great stones to use in my jewelry; she gets this book for her young daughter, who loved the movie "Up,"  which features the book and the idea behind it. I've not seen the movie, but apparently the purpose of the book is to write down the adventures you want/hope/intend to have in your Adventure Book.

This is a longstitch bound blank book, similar to my other leather journals, but it is larger and square, at Laura's request. The letters on the cover were colored with permanent markers. The straps around the fore edge are stitched to the back and close in front with Velcro dots. The coins on top are decorative only, a couple of old Mexican coins I've had for years.

I hope Laura's daughter loves it.

  1. an UP fan will absolutely love it, looks great!

  2. Such creativity, love your books and following your daily challenge. Keep it up it's fantastic and so inspiring for me.

  3. great adventure book! lets hope she finds some great things to add to it!
