A Book a Day? What's Up With That?

Hi, and welcome to this year-long project. So what's this all about and how did it happen, you might ask. In mid 2007, artist Noah Scalin decided to make a skull out of anything he could find, every day for a year. It stretched him in ways he never imagined, as an artist, a writer and a person. His experience turned into a blog that went viral, and then a book.

Others have picked up on the idea: 365 Hearts, 365 Masks, 365 Bears drawn on a cellphone, 365 paper napkin mustaches.
I wanted to play, too, and I chose books. I love books, I know a bit about making books (thanks to my talented book-maker sister, Marilyn Worrix), and they're broad enough in definition to give me a lot of creative leeway.

The whole point is not really the books. The idea is to stretch myself in many ways as an artist and a person, to set up a discipline, stick with it and see what that teaches me.

I hope you'll join with me and follow along on the journey chronicled here, and let me know what you think.

Book 100 - The Altar of Coffee - A Folded Book

100 Days! 100 hand-made books! I'm finding it hard to believe I have already come this far. I'm taking a personal moment here to celebrate. (Woot! Woot! Yay! Jambo! Right on! You go, girl!)  OK, I'll settle down now.

Today's hand-made book got it's inspiration and part of its form from a cardboard coffee sleeve I picked up in the airport the other day. I knew I'd find something "bookish" to do with it. I cut out a piece of mottled beige cardstock (Sort of a very pale cafe latte color) in the shape of a cup and glued it into the sleeve. Then I took another piece of the same stock and just started folding it. I wanted something roughly fan-shaped, and as I folded I really liked the shape it was taking on. I found a bunch of amusing quotes and quips about coffee and wrote them on the folds of the pages. Then I slid the folded page into the coffee sleeve. Voila! A simple little thing but mine own.. and I quite like it.

Since I don't have access to a printer here, I had to write the quips in ink and of course, wouldn't you know I spelled one wrong... or sort of. I crossed a "t" that should have been an "l." Maybe when I get home and back to my printer, I'll do another one of these but print the letters out.
